Sweet Sponsor Sunday’s Special Vacation Edition

Friends, welcome to Sweet Sponsor Sunday’s Special Vacation Edition!

What is Sweet Sponsor Sunday?  If I had to pinpoint the most important thing I’ve learned in my ten years as a marketing professional, it would have to be the power of word of mouth advertising.  It is so much more valuable than paid advertising, and infinitely more meaningful.

I believe in supporting fellow business owners who are doing great things.  I believe in the power of reciprocal advertising and all of its benefits.  Small businesses are the heartbeat of America.  I have known many small business owners during my life, and they are by far some of the most down-to-earth and hardest working individuals I have ever known.

On Sundays, Sweet Melissa’s hosts Sweet Sponsor Sundays and showcases organizations that we believe in and who have taken the time to support us, and we ask that our sweet friends show our wonderful sponsors some love!

This Sunday, we have the privilege of sponsoring VACATION!

We have been fortunate enough to be on vacation celebrating the wedding of two very special friends of ours.  We have had a wonderful time being with family and friends, and it has been an amazing trip.  We hope you are able to take vacation every once in a while, as it is so important to take time out to do something for yourself and your family that does not involve the day-to-day grind.  Our family is so busy all of the time that we rarely have “down time,” so this past few days have definitely helped us recharge our batteries.

Sweet Sponsor Sunday – Father’s Day Edition

Friends, welcome to Sweet Sponsor Sunday’s Special Father’s Day Edition!

What is Sweet Sponsor Sunday?  Well, if I had to pinpoint the most important thing I’ve learned in my ten years as a marketing professional, it would have to be the power of word of mouth advertising.

Today, we are changing up our Sweet Sponsor Sundays to showcase someone very special, my husband and the father of my sweet boys!

***

Fifteen years ago, I had the privilege of meeting my husband, and my life was forever changed for the better.  I grew up in an unstable environment, and when I turned sixteen, I couldn’t wait to get out of the house and start working.  I decided to apply to a local theme park and it was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.  I took my little brother with me for support, dressed in my best khakis and yellow dress shirt, and headed to the HR office of the park. I applied for a job in the Games Department, and thankfully for me, Games was full but Rides had an opening.  I was placed in the children’s area on a roller coaster, and I was thrilled.  I had the time of my life that first summer working at the park.  I met amazing people who are still an incredibly important part of my life.  I worked long hours, but I learned how to work hard, how to provide great customer service, the importance of time management and responsibility, and most importantly, commitment.

I couldn’t wait to come back to work again the next summer.  I was promoted to Supervisor that year and was looking forward to another fun summer.  My weeks were again filled with long hours and hard work, but I loved it!  I met so many new friends and we had a blast working together and hanging out after work.  I think of those days so much and smile!  Although all of us looked forward to the end of the summer because that meant the end of daily operation, I know I can speak for many of us who worked there that we didn’t always look forward to the end of the season.  I missed the park when I wasn’t there, and I missed my friends.  The park was an escape for me; an escape from my instability in my home life and from the challenges I experienced growing up.  I truly enjoyed it.

It was toward the end of that second season when I was working at one of the children’s rides by myself during the last three hours of the night.  From 7pm to 10pm, we were pretty much by ourselves working the last rotation at each individual ride.  That was sometimes a grueling rotation depending on the ride we worked.  On the night that changed my life forever, I was working at a small children’s roller coaster.  It was tough work, but it was fun too.  This coaster was usually a child’s first, and watching their smiles was awesome.  I can’t honestly write this and say it was fun all the time though, but it was usually a pretty great place to be.  That particular night was nice and cool (it was early Fall).  Around 9pm, the carrying manager of the children’s area decided to come pay me a visit to see how I was doing.  He stayed for a while and helped me run the ride for about 20 minutes.  He was older than me, and I was a bit intimidated.  I knew of him but didn’t really know him very well.  He was part of a different clique of people at the park that I wasn’t a part of because I was new to management.  He and his friends were all older than me and on their own.  He also had a way with the ladies, or so I heard 😉

Since that initial meeting, he and I hung out a bit more during breaks at the park or after the park closed at night. He would come by and visit every once in a while when I was working a ride, or help me with end of the night closing tasks.  It was during one of those nights in the office after the park closed that he wrote his pager number on a sticky note and gave it to me.  It took me several days, but I finally worked up the courage to page him (that sounds so funny now) and he called me back a couple hours later and we ended up talking into the night for over four hours. We realized we had so much more in common then we initially thought, and I was thrilled when he asked me out on our first date.  It was planned for a few days later, the day after Thanksgiving, and I couldn’t be more excited.

Prior to our date, I was planning to visit my family at my grandparent’s house for the holiday.  They warned me that they were all feeling bad with stomach issues, but I ignored the warnings and visited anyway.  I made it through the actual Thanksgiving holiday unscathed, and woke up the day after excited for my date and still feeling good.  Later in the evening, as I was getting ready, it hit me…the nasty, unforgiving stomach plague I caught from my family.  In just a matter of minutes, I was on the floor feeling AWFUL.  I couldn’t believe it!  He was already on his way to pick me up, and had to drive 35 minutes to get me…there was no way I could cancel.  I was determined to go out, so I attempted to eat a few crackers, drink some ginger ale, and hoped for the best.  I couldn’t keep anything down.  When he arrived to the house, I was sitting on the floor.  I’ll never forget the look on his face when he walked in.  Looking back on it now, it’s kind of funny, but I’m sure at the time he was not amused.  He asked me if I still wanted to go, and I said yes…and I’m sure he was hoping and praying I’d say no.  We had planned on dinner and a movie, about 35 minutes from my house.  I laid down in the car all the way there and only drank a Coke at dinner.  I missed most of the movie because I was so sick.  We did talk a little bit, but mostly about how sick I was.  At the end of the movie, he took me home, and I apologized profusely.  I knew he’d never call me again after that, and I was disappointed that I made the decision to continue with the date.  I went to bed, feeling sad and mad at myself.

The next day, I stayed in the bed most of the day.  I missed work which wasn’t like me, but there was no way I could go.  I was feeling sorry for myself and still mad at myself for ruining my date.  Around 6pm that evening, my step-mom came in my room and told me he had called…just to check on me!  I couldn’t believe it and was so happy.  He told her to have me call him later.  I did, and to my surprise, he asked me out again.  I couldn’t have been happier.

As the familiar saying goes, the rest is history.  We started dating exclusively within a couple of weeks, and dated all throughout college (I went away to school and he attended locally).  We had our fair share of highs and lows (still do!).  We fell apart and came back together.  I was a wreck when we weren’t together, and missed him terribly.  It was during those times I knew he was the one for me.  We had so much fun together, and I looked forward to every day with him.  After ten years of dating, he asked me to marry him in the most special way.  My late Grandfather was very sick and had a grave prognosis.  Everyone knew how important my Granddaddy was to me, so my now husband decided to have my Grandfather hand me the box with the ring in it at the dinner table at my Aunt’s house.  It was in a Life Saver’s box (which represents how his Dad proposed to his Mom), and he asked me to marry him when I opened the box.  My sweet Granddaddy was able to be there for it, and I am so grateful for that.  He passed away just a month later, and I am so happy that he was able to be a part of one of the happiest moments of my life.  My sweet husband knew just the right thing to do.  I didn’t need a fancy proposal; I just needed a memorable one.  It was perfect and meant the world to me.

We’ve been married for almost six years now. We have three sweet boys who are our lives.  They are the smartest, cutest, sweetest, most precious little things and we are just in love.  My husband is a wonderful father to them!  He is very patient and he is kind.  He teaches them so much every day, and plays with them…truly plays.  He is in the floor or outside with them every day.  He is present, and that is the most important thing.  They love their Daddy so much.  Their little faces light up when they see him, and I am so thankful to have such an awesome partner to raise our sweet boys.  I couldn’t imagine a better life than what we’ve created.

I’m so thankful I made the decision 16 years ago to apply to work in the Games Department at the amusement park, and am so glad I was hired by Rides instead.  I never would have met my husband, and would not be sitting here today reflecting on how much I love him and how grateful I am that he is the father of my children.

Dear M, thank you for 15 great years, for our sweet beautiful boys, and most importantly, for loving me.  You truly are a great husband and wonderful father, and I am appreciate you more than words can express.  I love you!

Sweet Sponsor Sunday – June 9, 2013

Friends, welcome to Sweet Sponsor Sunday!

What is Sweet Sponsor Sunday you ask?  Well, if I had to pinpoint the most important thing I’ve learned in my ten years as a marketing professional, it would have to be the power of word of mouth advertising.  It is so much more valuable than paid advertising, and infinitely more meaningful.

Thankful.

Hi sweet friends!  Wow, what a week we’ve had at Sweet Melissa’s!  If you need to take a few moments to get caught up, check out Wait a Minute Wednesday!  Here we are just a day or so later, and the excitement continues!  Tonight, we reached a milestone on our Facebook page – 100 Likes!  We are humbled and thrilled, and are truly grateful of your support.  Opening Facebook and seeing 100 was an awesome feeling!

We have made many new friends over the past few weeks, and have had the opportunity to reconnect with some sweet friends who we haven’t seen in years and didn’t realize how much we missed.  Along this journey over the past four weeks, we’ve also met some new friends who we are discussing partnership opportunities with for the future.  We never imagined we’d have such wonderful support this early on. What an amazing adventure, and it’s only just begun!

Today, Thursday, June 6th was a pretty incredible day.  We received a fantastic shipment in the mail with some of our new designs, all nice and pretty and ready to add sweet fragrances and beautiful light to our home.  We continued working on new partnership opportunities for Sweet Melissa’s and made contact with organizations interested in promoting our brand, and we reached 100 Likes on our Facebook page!  I didn’t think it could get much better than that…but it did!

Today (June 6th), our family celebrated the arrival of our sweet niece.  She was born at 9:37am this morning and is the sweetest, most precious little baby!  Our sweet little loves are mesmerized by her and my oldest son asked if he could spend the night in the hospital so he could spend more time with the baby.  They love their cousins, and she is of course, no exception.  I am incredibly blessed to have a married a man with a wonderful family.  The birth of this sweet little girl reminds me of how special family truly is.

Today (June 6th), I also quietly celebrated my late Grandfather who would have been 81 years old today.  My Granddaddy, or “Cracky” as my little brother lovingly used to call him, was the sweetest, hardest-working, kindest man I knew, and he would do absolutely anything for my brother and I.  He taught me how to fish, play cards, drive, grow a garden, search for seashells on the beach, and enjoy the small things in life.  I owe my love of family photographs to him.  I have vivid memories of him taking picture after picture of my brother and I growing up.  He loved getting his rolls of film developed and bringing back envelopes of photographs to show us.  He proudly carried around photos of his children and his grandchildren until the day he passed away.   I could write about his incredible generosity, support, and his love for his family and the Lord for hours.  He was an amazing man, and I am so lucky to be his granddaughter.  My best childhood memories have him in it, and I love him dearly.  He would have been smitten with my boys, and I’m sad for them that they will never get to meet him here on this Earth.  I will do my best to honor him and to make sure they knew about the incredible man he was.  We named our second son after him, and I fondly and proudly think of my Granddaddy whenever I call my second son by his name.  Happy Birthday Grandaddy!  I was able to witness the circle of life today with the birth of my sweet little niece.  She shares a birthday with an amazing soul.

Thank you friends for your love and support.  xoxo

We sincerely thank you for checking us out, reading our posts, and for sharing us with your friends and family!  Each time you all comment, post, like, and share, it is like unwrapping a present, and it means the world.  Thank you!

Make A Difference Monday

Hi Friends!  I can’t believe we’ve made it to Monday already.  Seems like we were just enjoying Friday night with our sweet boys.  We’ve had a productive weekend getting our house packed up and ready for our big move. We move into a rental property this weekend and yes, I’m still in denial.  I told my husband that I will probably be sad for a few weeks and that I’m going to have to avoid driving by here for a little while until it has really sunk in that I no longer own this home.  For now though, I’ll just enjoy the last week we have here and count my blessings that we were able to find another family that loves our house as much as we do.

Ok, enough sap for a while, right?!  If you have been following our journey for the past few weeks, you’ll notice we’ve had many firsts – a new blog, new sponsors, new programs, new, well, everything.  And today is no different…  Without further adieu, I welcome you to…

Make A Difference Monday

Community Service has always been important to me. I participated in a coed service fraternity during my undergraduate career and found a love for helping others.  I’ve always believed in giving back and I think giving can come in the form of time, money, support…you name it.  When we decided to embark on this crazy new adventure, I knew that a community involvement program would be a huge part of the business.  As our Community Involvement Program evolved, I also knew I wanted friends of Sweet Melissa’s to shape its direction.  I believe community service only works if the people participating in it truly believe in the organizations they are supporting, and that is why friends of Sweet Melissa’s will choose the organizations we support each quarter.  Starting now, we are accepting submissions for our 4th Quarter Community Involvement Program.  You, our sweet friends, will tell us who to support starting October 1 of this year!  YOU will MAKE A DIFFERENCE!  Prior to the start of a new quarter, we will be reaching out to our sweet friends and asking you to submit the names of organizations you love.  We only ask that the organizations are non-profit and make a difference in the lives of children, adults, or animals.  We will donate $.05 of each Signature Collection candle purchase to each one of four organizations every quarter of the year.

Our hope is that we can help make a small difference in the lives of others.  Should you decide to make a purchase from Sweet Melissa’s, we want you to walk away feeling good about it.  You should already feel good knowing that our candles are made in America and are made with natural soy wax and other renewable and recyclable resources, but we also want you to feel good knowing that your purchase is helping four different organizations transform lives.

To submit the name of your favorite organization, please comment on our Facebook page today.  We are accepting submissions now for our 4th Quarter program.  Toward the end of June, we will set up a poll on Facebook and allow our fans to vote for their favorite organizations.  Don’t worry, even if yours does not get picked for the next quarter, it will remain in the running for each quarter thereafter.  We’d love to support everyone’s favorite organizations!

Sweet Sponsor Sundays – Inaugural Sunday!

Friends, welcome to the Inaugural post of Sweet Sponsor Sundays!

Beginning today, Sunday, June 2nd, Sweet Melissa’s will begin hosting Sweet Sponsor Sundays!  We will be showcasing organizations that we believe in and who have taken the time to support us, and we ask that our sweet friends show our wonderful sponsors some love!

On this, our Inaugural Sweet Sponsor Sunday, I have the privilege of showcasing two fantastic organizations owned by former colleagues of mine, who also happen to be women and amazing mommies!

The Adventures of J-Man and MillerBug

JManandMillerBug

Jeannette Fender, owner of The Adventures of J-Man and MillerBug, is tenacious, savvy, and an amazing blogger!  I have had the pleasure of watching Jeannette’s blog grow from her very first post, and her journey has been an incredible one to watch. Jeannette has quickly become one of the most sought-after bloggers for her product reviews, giveaways, and sponsorship opportunities.  Jeannette has worked with everyone from small business owners like me all the way to big names like VTech, Cascade, Maytag, Dunkin’ Donuts, and the list goes on.  Not only does Jeannette provide opportunities to grow brands and sponsor products and business, but she also writes entertaining and heartfelt stories about her adventures with her family.  Jeannette is a mom just like me, and shares her experiences with the world, no matter if they are good or not-so-good.  She is down-to-earth and real, yet smart and savvy all at the same time!  She is an excellent writer, and I can guarantee you will be entertained by her blog.  Friends, please show Jeannette some love at The Adventures of J-Man and MillerBug.  Please take a moment to show her some love on Facebook too, where you can stay up to date with her latest reviews, giveaways, and adventures with her sweet J-Man and MillerBug!

Sweet Jellybean Bowtique

SJB Love

Kara Peeks, owner of Sweet Jellybean Bowtique, is one of the most fashion-forward women I’ve had the opportunity to know.  Kara and I had the pleasure of working together previously, and Kara taught me what couture really means 🙂  She is smart and witty, and has an eye for style!  Kara has several great loves in her life, but luckily for us, she has combined two of her greatest loves, her children and fashion, and has created her own clothing line for our sweet little ones!  Kara takes pride in her work and hand makes each item with quality.  Not only does she offer many great items that she has created herself, but she also custom makes outfits and accessories for your little ones based on your specifications.  Kara’s sweet clothing line offers outfits and accessories for little guys and gals.  She hand makes onesies, dresses, scrappy skirts, her very popular tutus, necklaces, bracelets, hair candy, and shoes for your little ladies.  And for your little fellas, you have got to check out her extremely cute necktie and suspender onesies.  I’m a mommy of three boys, so you know I’m all over the necktie onesies!  Her attention to detail is amazing, but her passion is what shines through the most!  She loves what she does, and it shows in her work!  Please show Kara some love and visit Sweet Jellybean Bowtique today!
